Putting Fuel (Diesel or Petrol) in Italy

This page is about how to put fuel into your hire car when filling up in Italy. Sounds easy but when you're confronted with unfamiliar pumps and processes it can be daunting.

Most petrol stations are manned but they expect you to fill using the automatic (self service) system. Make sure if you are hiring a car you are familiar with the side the fuel is put into, the type of fuel and how often you are likely to need fuel. Also it is worth investigating more than one fuel station near an airport if you are intending to hire a car and then fill it with fuel before returning the rental.

Fuel pumps are similar to Britain only there is not one automatic paying station per fuel. Instead there is usually only one self service paying station for all fuel pumps on the forecourt.

Instructions

• Insert payment method;
• Select pump (type in the number of your fuel pump). It will be clearly labeled;
• Walk back to car and fill the car;
• Go back to Fuel station and collect your receipt.

Not straightforward. Not logical but quite easy when you know how.
